How to get accurate pricing from RightCost.uk in six steps.
Using the pricing tool
1. Pick your industry — click the chip that matches your work. Cost defaults load automatically for that sector. Choose Other if your trade isn't listed and enter your own figures.
2. Enter standing costs — these are your fixed monthly costs whether you work or not. Insurance, finance payments, depreciation (asset value ÷ months you'll keep it), road tax, compliance, phone, software, accountancy. Set once, reused on every job automatically.
3. Enter this job's details — description, duration, fuel or materials, labour or driver pay, tolls, extras, subcontractors.
4. Toggle optional features — Dead Miles adds the real cost of an empty return leg (fuel + standing time). VAT shows the split between your income and HMRC's 20%. Fuel Card shows monthly and annual savings from your card provider.
5. Set your margin — drag the slider. 20% is a sensible starting point. Haulage typically runs 8–15%. Trades 15–25%.
6. Enter your email and calculate — first use only. Results appear within 10 seconds.
Understanding your result
Break-even floor — the minimum you must charge to cover every cost. Never quote below this number. If you do, you are paying to do the job.
Suggested price — break-even plus your target margin. This is what you should charge.
Market comparison — your price shown against typical rates in your industry. The teal line is your quote. Use this to check you're not leaving money on the table.
What-if table — your price at different margins. Shows you in pounds what a 5% margin reduction actually costs before you agree to it.
AI verdict — specific to your industry and your actual numbers. Flags market position, hidden costs, and one concrete tip.
Tips for accuracy
Most common mistake: underestimating depreciation. Your vehicle or equipment loses value every month whether you use it or not. Divide current replacement cost by months you expect to keep it. Include this in standing costs.
